About the Science Education Department

Science education department 220x180

The Science Education Department partners with teachers, schools and communities to deliver innovative educational experiences and access to authentic scientific research. Our goal is to inspire passion for science, promote better health for students and enhance science education throughout Washington state.

In 2009, we launched the Science Adventure Lab – a custom-built, state-of-the-art mobile science lab. The Science Adventure Lab is outfitted with research-grade equipment and travels to schools across Washington to provide innovative, hands-on science curriculum to students in grades 4 to 8.

The mobile lab has visited more than 225 schools in over 80 cities across Washington state. More than 90,000 students and 2,000 teachers have participated in the Science Adventure Lab program.

We have also created a variety of programs – including field trips, career exploration tours and summer high school training programs – that bring students to the Science Discovery Lab in Building Cure at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. These programs let students practice hands-on experiments in our labs, meet our researchers and envision careers in science and healthcare. Our aim is to inspire students to pursue these careers and show them how to get there.

More than 1,500 students have visited the Science Discovery Lab on field trips, and more than 125 students have participated in the summer high school training program.

We also support the training and development of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars at Seattle Children’s Research Division.
