  • Biography

    Jack C. Salerno, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and serves as Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Department.

    He earned his MD degree and completed a pediatrics residency at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his general pediatric cardiology fellowship followed by an advanced electrophysiology fellowship at Texas Children's Hospital.

    Dr. Salerno has expertise and training in sports cardiology. His specific areas of clinical interest include sports related symptoms and prevention of sports related sudden death.

    Dr. Salerno has developed a national reputation in sports cardiology and heart rhythm disorders. He has significant research interest in preventing sudden cardiac arrest in athletes and has over 30 publications related to sports cardiology. He has participated in several policy statements on sports cardiology including the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Rhythm Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Many of these policy statement address the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes, the creation of emergency action plans, and shared decision making which allows athletes with cardiovascular disease to return to sports.

    As a former intercollegiate football player, Dr. Salerno understands the complexities of dealing with athletes. Dr. Salerno is actively involved in community events and is on the Medical Board of the Nick of Time foundation who provide free sports screening events. Dr. Salerno is also active member of the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA) Sports Advisory Committee which is committed to the wellbeing of high school athletes.
