A Prospective Study of Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) to Define Natural History, Risk Factors, and Pathogenic Mechanisms

UAB_AFM

What is the goal of the study?

The study is a minimal risk, prospective observational study to describe the clinical spectrum of AFM in pediatric patients, and any association with possible infectious processes. The study will enroll patients with suspected AFM and household contacts. The study is also designed to collect samples for a biorepository, to be used in future studies to assess the etiology, pathophysiology, and genetics of AFM; to support the development of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics for AFM; and to develop a robust clinical database that can be utilized to probe markers or rare events associated with AFM.
