Parents and Tweens Tuning in, Engaging, Relating and Nurturing (PATTERN)

Treatment, referrals and insurance coverage

The Parents and Tweens Tuning in, Engaging, Relating and Nurturing (PATTERN) group works with parents, caregivers and adolescents ages 10 to 13 to help improve their relationship with each other by learning coping skills and ways to better manage their emotions.

Parents or caregivers must have completed either the SuperParenting group or Parenting With Purpose group at Seattle Children’s in the last 3 years before signing up for the PATTERN group.

Who can participate in the PATTERN group?

We work with parents, caregivers and adolescents ages 10 to 13 who are in 5th through 8th grades.

Your family may be eligible if your adolescent has any of the following that has also led to difficulties in the relationship between you and your child:

  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Problems managing their emotions

We may recommend that your child sees a mental health provider while participating in this group.

How do we get a referral to participate in the group?

If you are not a current patient in Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine: Please contact your child’s primary care or mental health provider. Ask them to fax in a referral to Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine for a general evaluation.

If you are a current patient in Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine AND you recently completed a parent or caregiver-only behavior management group: Please talk to your child’s Seattle Children’s provider about a referral to the PATTERN group. We will schedule a meeting with 1 of the group leaders to see if PATTERN is a good fit for your family.

Visit seattlechildrens.org/getservices for more information on our services.

When and where does treatment take place?

This is a group-based program. That means other families will attend most of the sessions.

There will be 10 group sessions. Each session lasts 60 minutes. You and your child will attend the group for 7 of the 10 weeks. There will be 3 group sessions for the parent or caregiver only. We will provide more details on specific dates and times when we schedule your group.

Visits will be by telehealth (virtual). You must be in the state of Washington at the time of each session. Let our team know if you do not have access to technology for the telehealth visits.

What is covered during the group sessions?

Parents or caregivers will meet with one of the group leaders for short 1-on-1 coaching sessions during the program.

During the group sessions, your family will learn how to:

  • Manage how you respond to extreme emotional experiences
  • Stop negative patterns of conflict
  • Identify and pay mindful attention to your emotions
  • Decrease disruptive behaviors and improve relationships
  • Increase positive emotional events, decrease vulnerability to strong emotions and change unhelpful emotional experiences
  • Provide validation, work on solving problems together and learn ways to change challenging behaviors

Is the program covered by insurance?

The 1-on-1 sessions between the therapist and parent(s) or caregivers are billed as 90846 (family therapy without patient). The parent and caregiver skills groups are billed as 90849 (multiple family group therapy).

Check with your insurance company to see if the visits are covered. We are in network with most insurance plans, including Medicaid and the Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) plans.
