Beyond Eating Disorder Recovery Group
This group is for adolescents who are taking their next steps beyond recovery from an eating disorder. We discuss additional support for recovery and tips for preventing eating issues in the future.
Who can participate?
The group is for adolescents ages 12 to 18 who are near the end of their eating disorder treatment with their eating disorder therapist.
Parents and caregivers will not attend the group sessions but will attend the feedback session at the end.
How long is the group and what does it cover?
The group meets once a week for 9 weeks. Each session lasts 60 minutes. There will also be a feedback session at the end of the 9 group sessions. During the group sessions we will discuss:
- How to accept your body the way it is (body neutrality)
- Ways to deal with the influence of peers and society on your perception of yourself
- Your value outside of your physical appearance
- How to strengthen your response to things that trigger you
- The signs that you may be relapsing (signs of the eating disorder coming back)
- Ways to manage changes in your identity now that the eating disorder is not part of it
- Next steps in your recovery
When and where does treatment take place?
All group sessions are currently held by telehealth (video visit). You must be physically in Washington state at the time of each session. Your child must attend the sessions. Let our team know if you do not have access to technology for the video visits.
Information on days and times will be shared with families when our scheduling team contacts you to schedule.
Who is on the team?
Team members include clinical psychologists, master’s-level therapists, and psychiatry or psychology trainees.
How do we get a referral to participate in the group?
Ask your child’s primary care or adolescent medicine provider, eating disorder therapist or mental health provider for a referral to the Beyond Eating Disorder Recovery Group through Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine.
Once we receive the referral, we may reach out to schedule a consult visit to
see if the group is a good fit.
