  • Biography

    Burt Yaszay, MD is the Chief of the Division of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital. He is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Orthopaedic Association.

    Dr. Yaszay earned his medical degree at Stanford University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington. This was followed by a fellowship in Pediatric and Adult Spine at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. He obtained further training in Pediatric Orthopedics at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego where he remained for nearly 14 years before returning to Seattle. His clinical interests include all areas of the spine. He has extensive experience in adolescent and neuromuscular scoliosis, early onset scoliosis and the cervical spine. While focused on pediatric patients, his training in the adult spine ensures that any recommendations incorporate the long-term effects of the disease and its treatment.

    Understanding the need to improve care, Dr. Yaszay is extensively involved in research. He is a member of multiple multi-center study groups including the Harms Study Group, Pediatric Spine Study Group, and the Fox Study Group. He is a co-founder and prior President of the Pediatric Cervical Spine Study Group. In addition to authoring over a 130 peer-reviewed articles, he has written 15 book chapters and been an editor for 3 major spine books. His research awards include Hibbs Award (2018, 2020), Louis Goldstein Award (2018, 2020), Whitecloud Award and the Globus Medical QSV Research Award. Dr. Yaszay enjoys teaching as well as being a student. He trains medical students, residents, fellows and visiting scholars. He is frequently invited as a speaker at national and international conferences. His most profound educational experience was being a SRS Travelling fellow and visiting major academic spine centers across Japan, China, South Korea and Hong Kong.

    Personally, Dr. Yaszay loves spending time with his wife, daughter and 2 dogs. He likes cycling, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling.
