"I have spent more time in the healthcare system than I hope anyone will ever have to, not just as surgeon, but also as a patient. Through my experiences I have learned that it is not just about providing the best care; but also assuring that caregivers and their child know this and feel cared for and advocated for by every member of their care team. This is the foundation for my practice and something I’ve been passionate about sharing with others through my role in teaching new surgeons. It is truly a privilege to be allowed to take care of one’s child, one that should be remembered with every step, every interaction, and at any opportunity by every care team member throughout each aspect of care."

  • Biography

Burt Yaszay, MD is the Chief of the Division of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital. He is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Yaszay earned his medical degree at Stanford University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington. This was followed by a fellowship in Pediatric and Adult Spine at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. He obtained further training in Pediatric Orthopedics at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego where he remained for nearly 14 years before returning to Seattle. His clinical interests include all areas of the spine. He has extensive experience in adolescent and neuromuscular scoliosis, early onset scoliosis and the cervical spine. While focused on pediatric patients, his training in the adult spine ensures that any recommendations incorporate the long-term effects of the disease and its treatment.

Understanding the need to improve care, Dr. Yaszay is extensively involved in research. He is a member of multiple multi-center study groups including the Harms Study Group, Pediatric Spine Study Group, and the Fox Study Group. He is a co-founder and prior President of the Pediatric Cervical Spine Study Group. In addition to authoring over a 130 peer-reviewed articles, he has written 15 book chapters and been an editor for 3 major spine books. His research awards include Hibbs Award (2018, 2020), Louis Goldstein Award (2018, 2020), Whitecloud Award and the Globus Medical QSV Research Award. Dr. Yaszay enjoys teaching as well as being a student. He trains medical students, residents, fellows and visiting scholars. He is frequently invited as a speaker at national and international conferences. His most profound educational experience was being a SRS Travelling fellow and visiting major academic spine centers across Japan, China, South Korea and Hong Kong.

Personally, Dr. Yaszay loves spending time with his wife, daughter and 2 dogs. He likes cycling, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling.

  • Patient Testimonials

    • Elizabeth Sammamish, WA 09.18.23

We are so lucky to have access to such amazing talent with Dr Burt Yaszay here at Seattle Children's. He is very highly regarded in the orthopedic community and I can clearly see why. He has treated my daughter for severe scoliosis, including performing a spinal fusion and accompanying rib surgery. He has been super supportive throughout the journey, including recommending an outside surgeon to help us obtain a second opinion prior to scheduling surgery with him (he understands how stressful medical decisions can be on parents!). The work he did on my daughter's spine is also truly remarkable. The surgery went very smoothly, he had a ton of patience answering my daughter's every question, and the correction he obtained on her spine is impressive (her physical therapist commented it's the straightest correction she has ever seen for a severe scoliosis patient!) I can't recommend Dr Yaszay enough, both in terms of his skills as a surgeon and compassion as a human being.

    • Michelle Puyallup, WA 08.10.23

Dr. Yaszay performed a spinal thoracic fusion on our daughter related to a sudden Scoliosis diagnosis with a 66° curve. He is a brilliant surgeon who knows the spine well. It was a scary process (imagining the worst) but fusion surgeries are common for him. He helped our daughter’s spine and literally within 4 weeks she was getting back to school and life. Dr. Yaszay is very serious and professional (which you want with this level of surgery) but also has a kind bedside manner for the kids. We are very grateful we went with Dr. Yaszay and his team at Seattle Children’s.

    • Judy San Diego, CA 03.06.23

Dr. Yaszay helped my son as an infant through a difficult case of Osteomyelitis. He had been repeatedly misdiagnosed by multiple doctors. Today my son is a thriving 16 1/2-year-old. I owe my son's mobility and even life to him. Thank you for your caring and expertise.
