Study of the pathophysiology of the Fontan circulation using innovative biomarkers and hemodynamics.

Pathophysiology of Fontan

  • Condition(s): Other
  • Phase: N/A

What is the goal of the study?

The Fontan circulation is the final surgical palliation of complex congenital heart disease (CHD) with a single ventricle (SV). This typically occurs around 4-7 years of age. However, for those who meet the surgical candidacy to have this final palliation, they grow up with this less than ideal circulation for the rest of their life. Because of the serious complications that can occur over time, even during childhood, routine serial cardiac catheterization to obtain hemodynamics and changes in the cardiovascular anatomy is an accepted practice in the follow-up of this at risk congenital heart disease population. During these cardiac catheterizations, adjunctive data such as echocardiogram, laboratory testing, and comprehensive clinical review are also performed. We see this as an opportunity to better understand the pathophysiology in the Fontan circulation by adding research targeted studies to these longitudinal time points.
