Congenital Heart Disease in Children: Kidney-Associated Conditions with Epidemiologic Endpoints - CHICKADEE
CHICKADEE
What is the goal of the study?
This is a comprehensive research initiative aimed to study medium term kidney health outcomes in children who underwent open heart surgery in early childhood. Knowing that adult with congenital heart disease have high prevalence of hypertension and renal failure, our goal is to characterize and find novel biomarkers for early development of renal dysfunction in children 4-8 years after their initial surgery. Patients will be recruited in cardiology clinic to participate longitudinally over three annual visits with their cardiologist. Each visit will include blood pressure measurement, placement of an ambulatory blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, lab draw and urine collection for kidney function evaluation. The first visit will include lab draw for an array of structural and functional kidney proteins that are not routinely in clinical use. In addition, past clinical data on perioperative course and continuous data on cardiac testing and medications through the time of study will be collected. Our goal will be recruit 350 patients, 100 at our center in Seattle (goal of 50 per year with 3 year follow up each).
