Accommodation and vergence in strabismic children

Strabismus

  • Clinicaltrials.gov ID: NA

What is the goal of the study?

Additional category of expedited review: 6. The purpose of this study is to characterize the parameters that define accommodation and vergence and their interactions in children with strabismus and strabismus risk factors, as compared to children with normal visual development. We will collect longitudinal data to evaluate the changes in these parameters over time, both in clinically stable conditions, and in children who undergo a significant change in their status, whether spontaneously (onset or deterioration of strabismus), or as a result of treatment interventions (initiation of spectacle treatment, or strabismus surgery). This will enable us to characterize the properties of the accommodation and vergence systems in children with both normal and abnormal binocular visual development, and to identify characteristics that may predict the presence, type, severity and stability of strabismus, as well as factors that may predict responses to treatment and help guide the decisionmaking process for treatment interventions. Our ultimate goal is to develop a knowledge base that will improve our ability to predict and prevent strabismus, and result in better visual outcomes of strabismus treatment.
