Why do core strengthening at Seattle Children’s?
- Your child will learn to be independent in core exercises in a small group setting.
- We can modify and tailor the class to your child, so they do exercises safely and effectively.
- We provide resources for the time between physical therapy and your child’s return to sports and activities.
What are the goals of the class?
The Therapeutic Core Strengthening Class will:
- Strengthen the spine and trunk (torso) muscles with a focus on functional movement patterns and endurance.
- Teach effective stretching of key muscle groups.
- Encourage independence and the ability to follow rules in a long-term home exercise program.
- Aid pain-free transition to sports and daily activities.
- Decrease risk of future re-injury.
- Provide your child with the tools they need to reach their personal goals.
- Build confidence in managing their home exercise program.
What can I expect from the class?
A 55-minute class, once per week, for 6 weeks:
- Performed in our gym, taught by a sports physical therapist (PT).
- Begins with light cardio and dynamic warm-up, followed by a series of exercises addressing various muscle groups that stabilize the spine.
- Ends with stretching and education as a cool-down.
- Designed to progress through 3 phases with increasing difficulty.
- Teaches exercises to do at home. We expect your child to follow the program outside of the class as well.
What does my child need to participate?
- A healthcare provider’s referral to PT including a note that a group setting is appropriate.
- We may recommend 1-on-1 visits before the group class starts to improve success.
