Options for Speech Therapy

  • Español PDF

Here are several options, based on your child’s age, to help you find speech therapy from school districts and state agencies, or organizations using state-funded or private insurance.

State

If your child is 0 to 3 years old:

  • Contact the Washington State Early Support for Infants and Toddlers Program (ESIT), also known as Birth to Three (3). Infants and toddlers are eligible for an evaluation.
  • Call 1-800-322-2588 or visit dcyf.wa.gov/services/child-development-supports/esit/early-intervention-services.

School

  • Your child does not have to attend their local school to have an evaluation. If your child is enrolled in a private school or in a home school program, they are still eligible for an evaluation in their school district.

If your child is 3 to 5 years old:

  • They are eligible for an evaluation through your school district preschool services program.
  • Contact the special education or student services office for your local school district. It may be called Child Find.

If your child is 5 years or older:

  • They are eligible for an evaluation through your school district special services staff.
  • Contact your local school district. Discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher or principal.

Private Health Insurance

  • Contact your child’s insurance provider. Ask about the benefits for speech and language therapy for your child and for a list of in-network clinics and providers in your community.

What other options do I have?

  • Contact your child’s insurance provider and ask about the reimbursement from out-of-pocket payment benefits. This will count as out-of-network. You can go to any available provider who will give you a bill for reimbursement.
    • Note: You must submit receipts to your insurance for reimbursement. Your provider will not do this for you as you are out-of-network.
  • Visit the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) at asha.org. Look for Find a Professional. Search for a provider in your community.

What if I am looking for an evaluation, not treatment?

If you need an evaluation, not treatment, call us at 206-987-2104, so we can schedule your child’s appointment.
