Middle School Life After Cancer Group

This group is for middle school students who have completed treatment for cancer or a brain tumor. A group for parents and caregivers is offered at the same time as the patient group.

How long is the group and what does it cover?

There are 5 group sessions for patients and 5 group sessions for parents or caregivers that meet at the same time. Each session lasts 1 hour.

During the sessions, you will learn and practice skills that will help you with issues that can come up after cancer treatment ends.

Coping skills

Learn to understand and manage common thoughts and feelings that you may have after cancer or brain tumor treatment.

School issues

Learn about common accommodations, strategies and supports at school.

Friend and family issues

Connect with peers around issues with navigating friendships and family relationships after treatment.

Health issues

Learn how to cope with common health issues that may happen after cancer or brain tumor treatment.

Where and when does the group take place?

Groups will be held at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Ocean zone, level 5. We will let you know the day and time of the group sessions when you call to schedule. Please email [email protected] or call 206-987-1771 if you have questions.

How much does it cost?

Your insurance will be billed for each session your child attends. Check with your insurance company to see if the group sessions are covered and how much you need to pay. We are in network with most insurance plans, including Medicaid and the Medicaid Managed Care Organization plans.

The codes billed for the patient group are 96164 and 96165. The parent group will not be billed. Contact the Psychiatry Insurance Processing team at 206-987-2164, option 8, if you have questions.

How do I register?

Talk to your hematology/oncology provider or social worker and ask them to place a referral for Middle School Life After Cancer Group through Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. Call 206-987-2164, option 1, to be scheduled for the group.
