AYA Cancer Group

Who should attend?

This group is for adolescents and young adults (AYA), in the spring of their senior year of high school or older, who have received treatment for cancer or a brain tumor. You are welcome to attend, whether you are currently in treatment, recently finished treatment, or finished treatment many years ago. Most AYA’s have never met another AYA with cancer before attending this group and most group members say that it is helpful to know other people their age who have experienced similar things related to their cancer treatment.

How long is the group and what does it cover?

The group meets for 8 one-hour sessions. You will give and receive support from other group members and learn about issues related to cancer in young adulthood.

  • Mental health: Discuss common thoughts and feelings that can arise during or after cancer or brain tumor treatment such as survivor guilt, “scanxiety” and anger.
  • Social support: Connect with peers around issues with navigating friendships, family relationships, and dating during and after treatment.
  • Health issues: Discuss strategies for coping with short and long-term effects of cancer treatment

Where and when is the group?

Groups may be offered in person at Seattle Children’s Hospital or by telehealth (video) using Zoom. To find out the day and time of the next group session, please email [email protected].

How much does it cost?

Your insurance will be billed for each session you attend. We recommend that you call your insurance company to find out if the cost of the group is covered and how much you need to pay if the full amount is not covered. The codes billed for the patient group are: 96164 (1 unit) and 96165 (2 units).
