How Seattle Children’s is Engaging Trainees in eConsult Workflows
July 1, 2026
Starting this summer, Seattle Children’s specialties may begin utilizing fellows and/or residents trained in specialty areas to respond to eConsults.
As an academic institution, Seattle Children’s is allowing trainees to respond to eConsults to hone their specialty expertise and understand how various services, such as eConsults, can better support community primary care providers.
Attending physicians will review, edit and attest to the fellow/resident's documentation before the ordering provider receives a response.
- The fellow/resident will review the eConsult, determine if it will be accepted or declined, and respond with the appropriate guidance or rationale for declining.
- The response will go to the attending physician to review and make any additions or corrections. Once they have reviewed and attested to the fellow/resident's response, the response will be sent to the ordering provider.
This follows the standard attending physician attestation workflow used at Seattle Children's. To determine if a trainee responded to your eConsult, go to the eConsult in Chart Review – the attending attestation will be visible at the top of the eConsult. You will not see the attending attestation when viewing the eConsult response within the InBasket message.
Ordering providers can continue to expect a 3-business day turnaround time on eConsult responses.
Community providers who have not started using eConsults for timely and efficient care guidance can sign up for EpicCare Link and learn more.
