Otolaryngology, Cranial Base, Vascular Anomalies, Craniofacial Center, Fetal Care and Treatment Center

On staff since October 2016

Academic Title: Associate Professor

"My goal is to listen to patients and families and understand the problem. This helps me guide families to make the best decision for them. It is a privilege to treat patients and families, and I will always make sure that they are cared for in the best possible way."

  • Randall Bly, MD, is an Associate Professor of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery through the University of Washington-School of Medicine, and the Co-Director of the Cranial Base Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital.  Dr. Bly graduated from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine, and completed residency at UW followed by a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Seattle Children’s Hospital.  With a background in mechanical engineering, he also serves as adjunct faculty through the UW College of Engineering. Dr. Bly leads a group of surgeon-scientists and engineers at the BioRobotics lab where the team collaborates on designing cutting edge innovations in the surgery. Dr. Bly’s research interests include surgical planning and investigations on how surgeons and engineers plan, guide, and analyze surgery.

Randall A. Bly is a pediatric otolaryngologist and cares for patients and families with a variety of problems in the head and neck. He has specific interests in patients with speech and swallowing problems, vascular malformations, breathing difficulties, neck masses, and congenital anomalies. He incorporates resources available at Seattle Childrens Hospital to provide the highest level of care to patients and families. His research interest is in how surgery is planned, guided, and analyzed in order to improve patient outcomes, reduce the length of hospital stays, and recover more quickly.

    • Emily Mount Vernon, WA 01.13.20

Dr. Bly has helped my daughter tremendously. She was diagnosed with hereditary paragangliomas. He just completed his second surgery on my daughter's neck specifically the caratoid arteries and vagus nerve. Our family was frightened. As soon as we were referred to Dr. Bly at Seattle Children's Hospital we had hope. After meeting Dr. Bly we knew immediately that our daughter would be ok. He was reassuring, professional and kind. He didn't just talk to us about what was happening, but included my daughter in every conversation and decision.

    • Katherine Seattle, WA 10.15.19

We came to the Vascular Anomalies clinic without knowing what to expect for a hemangioma on my daughter's head. We certainly were not expecting to hear surgery though. I met Dr. Bly during our office visit and he prepped us for surgery. He was direct, decisive, kind, and great with our 1 year old daughter. He answered questions I had and I immediately trusted him with my daughter's health and safety. On the day of surgery he was very reassuring and compassionate. All follow up appointments were great as well. Throughout the entire process he was a confident figure as my child's doctor and support for me as the parent. I cannot speak more highly of him.

    • Rimma Redmond, WA 12.29.18

Dr Bly evaluated and remived our son’s adenoids. It was a very good experience, my son had zero pain and bleeding afterwards and was completely back to normal just a few hours after the surgery. His chronic congestion has hugely improved.

    • Christine Snoqualmie, WA 05.08.17

Dr. Bly met us in the OR at Seattle Children's the night my 7 year old son Beau had an arterial bleed on post op day one after his tonsillectomy. He was calm, reassuring upon arrival. I trusted him immediately. He was able to quickly cauterize the vesel after the anesthesia took effect. He explained everything very thoroughly afterwards and checked on Beau in the ICU the following day and was just a genuinely kind young man.
