"I was first attracted to pediatric surgery during my 3rd year of medical school at the University of Nevada, while watching my mentor repair a tracheoesophageal fistula. I was captivated by the delicate nature of the surgery, the complexity of the congenital anomaly, and the opportunity to care for both the patient and the family. I am so lucky to have a job in which I have a positive and healing impact on peoples lives on a daily basis. I love talking with the families and patients and helping them understand and navigate the complexities of medical issues. That is definitely the most rewarding part of my job. Simlarly, my colleagues are amazing -- both within my division as well as throughout the hospital. Finally, I enjoy the opportunity to improve the quality and safety of care we deliver to our patients by contributing to our hospitals continuous performance improvement effort. I feel profoundly blessed to be a pediatric surgeon at Seattle Children's."

Jeffrey R. Avansino, MD, is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington and an attending pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital. Dr. Avansino earned his medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine in 1999 and completed his residency at the University of Washington in 2006. From 2002 to 2004, he served as a research fellow at the VA Medical Center in Seattle, studying intestinal stem cell transplantation. In 2008, he completed his fellowship training in pediatric surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital.
Dr. Avansino is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in adult general surgery and pediatric surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
His clinical interests include anorectal malformations and Hirschsprungs disease, minimally invasive surgery and chest wall reconstruction. He helped develop a cutting edge multidisciplinary clinic at Seattle Children's called the Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine (RPM) clinic. The RPM clinic involves a comprehensive approach to patients with abnormalities of the pelvic floor and its organs (urinary, reproductive, and intestine) in a concentrated, team effort to improve their quality of life.
Dr. Avansino's research interests center on continuous process improvement (CPI) and quality. CPI is a philosophy based on the Toyota production system used to improve processes by eliminating unnecessary steps in the care of our patients and applying these principals not only to academic and administrative processes but also to clinical work. Clinical Standard Work (CSW) combines the use of evidence-based medicine and consensus opinion to create a standard and reliable method of caring for our patients. The combination of CPI and CSW creates an environment for patients that heightens and enhances safety and efficiency.
Locally, he is a medical staff officer and serves on the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Improvement Steering Committee, and the Credentialing Professionals Standards Committee.-

Dr. Avansino was the surgeon for our daughter’s inguinal hernia repair. He was very thorough, talked to us in great detail about the procedure, what to expect, potential risks, etc. his entire team throughout the surgery (especially the attending anesthesiologist) treated our family and child with care and respect. Surgery went well, and within 48 hours our daughter was back to her usual self, riding bikes and playing with friends. We are very grateful for his care and the expert care of the children’s team. Thank you!
-
Dr. Avansino has been AMAZING with my child. We were first referred at our 5yr well child. That was 9 years ago, and we still see him for check ups, and if it happens there is no doctor I would trust more for surgery than Dr. Avansino!
-
We met Dr. Avansino a little over 5 years ago, when our oldest daughter was born. She with a condition that her intestine and otjer parts of her internal organs were outside of her body. Within a couple hours of her birth Dr Avansino was able to place everything back into her abdomen. His bedside manner is the best I have ever encountered! We are very grateful to Dr. Avansino for his expertise and minimally invasive approach to repairing our daughter's abdominal defect.

Dr Avasino was a blessing to my daughter in 2012 my 5 year old daughter had surgery after we had a car accident the doctors didn't think she was going to make it but she did because of Dr Avasino

Dr. Avansino has been a blessing to my child. My son was diagnosed with Hirschsprungs shortly after birth 10 years ago. For as long as I can remember he has had bowel incontinence. After meeting with Dr. Avansino we finally felt like someone has listened to us. My son is feeling good about treatment and is able to communicate his concerns with out being disregarded. Amazing doctor!! Hands down the best at Children's! Thank you for all you do :)

This is a copy of an email that I sent directly to Dr. Avansino, to which he replied immediately with sentiments that made my heart beam: Dr. Avansino, It has taken me entirely too long to let you know how much my wife and I thank you for the incredible job you did for our son. There were two surgeries that you had performed, one to address an Inguinal Hernia, and one prior to that to remove an abdominal abscess. This was when our son was 2 years old, in 2008 at Childrens Hospital. Our real concern at the time of the operations, and for subsequent years afterwards, was that these procedures would somehow limit his ability to be physical as a growing young person. I am pleased beyond words to say that he is running around and being as crazy with his body as any other kid his age. This is the result of your efforts, and we cant thank you enough. As long as you know that what you do has a direct positive impact on the quality of life of the people you encounter, much less the patient, that is all that matters to me. Very sincerely, Steve

In 2010, our son Ricky was diagnosed with a very extreme form of UC at the age of nine. His treatment of our son was that of an extremely caring and knowing surgeon who treated him not only professionally, but also in a very peraonal manner. Our son has very fond memories of Dr Avansino and care that he received from all of the staff at Seattle's Children's Hospital.

My daughter, Paige has been going to Children's Hospital for 18 years now. It has been a long road of various stages of all of her complex issues. In the last year or so we were introduced to a clinic called Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine. Walking into the clinic we felt hopeless and defeated, both her and I. But, Dr. Jeff Avansino has been the Best Doctor and support for our family that we have ever had! He is positive, attentive, and all around very comforting! He has gone above and beyond in the care for my daughter. He was always there to answer any question I had, or reassure us of something I was worried about. He was and is always very caring. He always makes me feel a flood of comfort when he comes to check on Paige while she is at the hospital for any procedure. He has checked on Paige and answered my nervous questions even though he was not scheduled to see us. Dr. Avansino changed Paige and my family's life so much! We are very grateful to have met him. :)

This past June Dr. Avansino preformed a laparoscopic resection to remove an ileal stricture related to an earlier Crohns flare in our son Kyle. This was the first surgical procedure for Kyle. The timing of this surgery was not planned however Dr. Avansino had met with us during two prior hospital stays and one clinic appointment to discuss proactively a treatment plan for him. Dr. Avansino and the staff at Childrens walked us through each procedure given to Kyle over the past six months leading up to this point, as well as explaining to us what his surgery would entail. We felt well informed and as calm as we could be under the circumstance. Kyle was at ease going into surgery and throughout his recovery stay at Childrens. I understand he is not cured from his Crohns disease, we just feel strongly that Dr Avansino helped us make the right choice in treatment for our son before he leaves for college this coming September. My husband and I felt very comfortable leaving Kyle in Dr. Avansino hands. We really cant thank him enough!

Dr. Avansino is an amzing doctor! He gave us and our baby girl so much thought and attention. He truly cares for each of his patients. We appreciate the fact that everytime we came into his office we felt as if he knew us and especially knew our daughter and that was a very comforting feeling! He kept us very informed throughout her surgery and even during her recovery. Thank you Dr. Avansino for what you have done for our little girl! You are Great!
