When my son was 11/12 he caught a bad case of the flu. He had been home from school two weeks. He tried to go back to school and couldn’t stay awake so he spent most of his time in the sick room. He stayed home again as I took him to five local doctors to find out what was wrong. He answered all their questions but he could not stay awake or even walk without assistance. My husband and I found a doctor a few hours away who worked with children on pain issues, but he did not know what it was either. He recommended we get an endoscopy done because my son had such a sore throat he couldn’t eat. We did have that done to no avail. Our physical therapist that our family went to, started to work with our son to try to build up his stamina and strength. We finally had an appointment with Children’s Hospital and my PT asked me to ask them about something he suspected which actually turned out to be the diagnosis-RSD. Before we saw Dr. Walco I had begun to lose hope. I cried a lot, thinking he had something that might kill him. Dr. Walco ordered all the testing they do that works together from occupational therapy to psychiatrist, and returned with the diagnosis and the treatment to get better. Since we lived so far from the hospital and in another state, he transferred his care to our PT, who worked him hard until he was functional and able to go back to school. He’s a healthy, happy 24-year-old, and I truly believe Dr. Walco put him on that path. I have bragged about his knowledge and wisdom a lot. Thank you so much Dr. Walco, you changed the direction we had been going, and life became so much better. Tammy Anderson

We were passed around Seattle Childrens for 9 months trying to figure out my 8 year olds pain. When we got into the pain clinic the results were dramatic and finally made a difference. Dr. Walco used a multi pronged approach to treat her without any drugs. Savannah got her pain free life back thanks to Dr. Walco and his team. Thank you. Thank you!

To say Dr Walco saved our lives is an understatement. My daughter, who has CRPS, was sent to over 25 Dr's yet her constant pain in her back and both legs continued to get worse and had her bedridden and unable to attend high school. My 6 year old and i were heartbroken and i tried everything humanly possible to fix it but to no avail. She was a healthy, happy, wonderful student and athlete but was hit with such horrific pain with CRPS (RSD) that she was unable to have any quality of life...until she met Dr walco. Not only did he treat her physical condition but helped her find the emotional strength that she needed to fight this painful disease. My daughter was at the point of not believing in Dr's and only someone as brilliant and compassionate as he could bring out such strength in a girl who had all but given up on getting better. Dr walco made sure she knew he was on her side and worked as hard as she did to get her on the road to recovery. My daughter had to go through very painful physical therapy in order to have a chance at getting better yet he was able to get her to do even more than she was asked to do. It was a long road but she is living a full life. She is in her 3rd year of college and even works part time. After seeing her bedridden for almost 2 years its hard to watch her go snowboarding and many other things that worry me but to see a young lady who had no life...no friends around anymore.... no fun... live her life to the fullest is a dream come true and it is Dr. Walco that helped her work so hard to get better and to have a life that she appreciates every day. He is our hero and there are no Dr's i would recommend but him.....PS--- my daughter is going to school to become a physical therapist and hopes to help children just as she was helped by Dr Walco. If you need your child to have the best care there is then Dr. Waco is what you need. Jennifer Morrow

My research interests focus on clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of medications to treat pain in children. These endeavors require the collaboration of academic clinicians, the United States Food and Drug Administration, and pharmaceutical sponsors. Ethical and pragmatic considerations call for novel research paradigms that maintain the validity and clinical applicability that are necessary to adequately evaluate a medication. I contnue to work for the establishment of a national registry focused on recurrent and chronic pain in children.
