Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is established by federal mandate to oversee the care and use of animals in research. The IACUC ensures compliance with federal regulations through:

  • Review and approval of all proposed animal activities
  • Regular inspection of animal facilities
  • Semi-annual review of the institution’s animal program
  • Investigation of animal welfare concerns

The IACUC is composed of veterinarians, researchers, non-scientific members and representatives of the public. IACUC members are appointed by the Institutional Official, a role currently held by the chief scientific officer.

Seattle Children’s Animal Welfare (PHS) Assurance number is D16-00119. The animal care and use program has been fully accredited since 1999.
