The Development of Sensitivity to Electrical Stimulation with Cochlear Implants

The Development of Sensitivity to Electrical Stimulation with Cochlear Implants

What is the goal of the study?

In order to assess the effects of signal processing strategies in young cochlear implant (CI) recipients, behavioral measures of their perception of electrical stimulation are needed. This project will measure, model, and influence the detectability of electrical stimulation. Sensitivity to speech-like and musical sounds will also be examined. Observer-based methods will be used to measure perception in infants and toddlers. A multiple-alternative forced choice psychophysical procedure will also be used with older children and adults. To complement behavioral measures, physiologic data from the auditory nerve and/or brain will be measured using standard noninvasive methods. A computational model will be developed to provide quantitative predictions of the psychophysical and physiological data. CI signal processing strategies will be studied that could improve speech understanding and sensitivity to musical pitch and timbre.
