A Comparison of Two Brief Suicide Prevention Interventions Tailored for Youth on the Autism Spectrum
Suicide Prevention in Autism
What is the goal of the study?
To compare the effectiveness of two suicide prevention strategies tailored for autistic individuals: the Safety Planning Intervention tailored for Autistic individuals (SPI-A) and SPI-A plus structured follow-up contacts (SPI-A+). This is a cluster randomized controlled, type 1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial. The interventions, SPI-A and SPI-A+, will be delivered by existing front-line clinicians as standard care during clinical visits when clinically indicated. Randomization will occur at the clinician level such that each clinician will be randomly assigned to implement either SPI-A or SPI-A+ with all appropriate patients. Patient participants will complete follow-up assessments conducted by an independent evaluator, blinded to intervention condition, at 1, 6, and 12 months following the safety plan. Using mixed methods, we will also examine implementation outcomes (acceptability and feasibility).
