Feeding Foundations: Caregiver Education Class

The Feeding Foundations: Caregiver Education Class through the Pediatric Feeding Program helps parents and caregivers understand what causes feeding difficulties and offers tools to help you manage your child’s care.

Who should attend?

Parents and caregivers of children and teens with complex feeding difficulties (with or without a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder).

Examples of these difficulties include:

  • Highly restrictive diet
  • Dependence on a feeding tube (NG- or G-tube)
  • Use of a liquid supplement for all or many of their calories
  • Difficulty transitioning to textured foods

Please note: This class is only for parents and caregivers. Your child will not attend the class and childcare is not provided.

How long is the class and what does it cover?

This class for parents and caregivers meets once a week for 4 weeks. Each session is 80 minutes. The class will cover:

  • Common challenges for children with restrictive eating
  • The science behind feeding difficulties
  • How feeding challenges can begin and continue over time
  • Practical first steps toward expanding diet and meal participation

You will also learn from other families experiencing similar challenges.

Please note: This class does not provide direct treatment or individualized recommendations for your child.

Where does the class take place?

The class is offered by telehealth (video visit). You must be in the state of Washington at the time of each video visit. Let our team know if you do not have access to technology for the visit.

How much does it cost?

The class costs $20. It is not billed through insurance. Seattle Children’s will bill families. You do not have to pay for the classes if your child has Washington Medicaid (Apple Health) or you qualify for Seattle Children’s Financial Assistance Program.

Learn more about the Financial Assistance Program at seattlechildrens.org/finasst or by calling 206-987-3333. The Financial Assistance Program may be able to help. It is based on family size and income.

How do I register?

Please ask your provider to make a referral to the Autism Center for the Feeding Foundations: Caregiver Education Class. We will call to register you for a class once we receive your referral and there is an opening.
