Pectus Band

For treating pectus carinatum

Putting on the brace

  1. Wear a clean t-shirt under the brace.
  2. Undo the buckle on one side of the brace.
  3. Wrap the brace around your torso.
  4. Align front pad over the highest point of your carinatum.
  5. Tighten buckles to apply moderate pressure to the carinatum.
  6. The brace should be tight enough to hold itself up, but not so tight that it causes pain or makes it hard to breathe normally.

Wearing schedule

  • Begin with 1 to 2 hours of wear and gradually increase wear time and tightness, as tolerated.
  • Work up to 18 to 20 hours per day.
  • Remove brace for sports, swimming, and bathing.

Cleaning instructions

  • Clean skin to prevent skin irritation.
  • Clean the inside of the brace daily with rubbing alcohol.

Skin checks

  • Check skin daily for areas of irritation.
  • When checking the skin, look for red marks that do not go away within 30 minutes. When pressed, pressure marks should turn a lighter shade and pressure marks should fade within 30 minutes. Discolored areas under the corrective pads may not fade.
  • Red marks from the edges of the brace should fade in about 30 minutes.

When should I call the Orthotics Department?

  • If your child has any skin problems like blisters, sores, rashes, or bruises.
  • With any brace related questions or concerns including brace slipping, gel coming off the pads, or pain while wearing the brace.

Follow-up in 3 months

To check fit and repeat measurements and photos to compare to your child’s baseline measurements. For brace adjustments, if needed.
