Your child’s doctor has requested they bring in a first morning urine sample to their next clinic visit. This sample must be collected as soon as your child wakes up on the day of their clinic visit. Please follow these simple steps below.
To collect the sample
The night before
- Have your child empty their bladder before going to bed the night before their clinic visit.
- Your child should stay lying down until the first morning urine sample is taken.
The morning of the clinic visit
- When your child wakes up in the morning have them go straight from their bed to the bathroom to collect the sample.
- Use a specimen cup from your last clinic visit or any clean container with a lid you have at home.
- Have your child pee into the container (1/2 full is fine).
Please note: If your child is a girl who is close to or past puberty:
Use a clean damp cloth or personal wipe on the genital area. Wipe from front to back.
The test should not be done if your child is menstruating.
To store the sample
- Keep the sample in the refrigerator until you leave for clinic.
- If it will take you longer than 30 minutes to get to the lab, place the sample in a plastic bag with some ice to keep it cold on the way.
