How to Collect a Clean Urine Sample

Your child’s doctor has asked for a urine (pee) test for your child. Please follow these simple steps to collect a clean sample of their urine.

1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water before collecting your child’s sample.

If your child has a vagina:

1. 1. Have your child sit on toilet with their legs spread apart.
   2. Gently clean 1 side of the opening where the urine comes out with the 1st towelette. Wipe once from front to back.
   3. Clean the other side of the opening where the urine comes out with the 2nd towelette. Wipe once from front to back.
   4. Clean across the opening with the 3rd towelette. Wipe once from front to back.
   5. Throw away the used towelettes.

If your child has a penis:

1. 1. Gently clean the tip of their penis with the towelette.
   2. If your child has foreskin, do not forcefully retract it back but gently clean the tip of the penis thoroughly with the towelette.
   3. Clean the opening where the urine comes out.
   4. Use all 3 of the towelettes and then throw them away.
      
      
2. Open the plastic cup. Do not touch the inside of the cup or lid.
3. Have your child pee into the toilet for a few seconds, then stop their flow of urine.
4. Put the cup in front of your child’s body so that it can catch their urine. Have them pee into the cup. Try not to let the cup touch their body.
5. Screw the lid onto the cup tightly.
6. Wipe any urine from the outside of the cup.
7. Put the cup in the plastic bag and seal it.
8. Wash your hands again with warm water and soap.
9. Bring the urine sample to the lab within 1 hour. If you can’t make it in an hour, keep the urine refrigerated (for up to 8 hours) and bring it on ice.
