If you’ve broken a bone, did you have an X-ray? The last time you were sick, did you pick up medication from a pharmacy? At the beginning of your last doctor’s appointment, did someone check your blood pressure and pulse and oxygen rate? Have you ever had lab work performed when you’ve been sick? If you answered “yes,” then you’ve interacted with an allied health professional. Allied health describes a range of healthcare professionals who are not doctors or nurses.

We are offering local high school students the opportunity to participate in our free Scrubs & ’Scopes Camp at Seattle Children’s. During this five-day camp, students will explore various allied health careers by job shadowing medical assistants, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, pharmacy technicians and radiology technologists in a clinical environment, observing as they provide patient care.

Students will also work through interactive, hands-on simulation labs to learn and practice various skills on models such as taking blood pressure and blood oxygen levels; simulating medication compounding for oral and IV medications; using microscopes; and taking X-rays, among other experiences.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage with allied health professionals to ask questions and discuss various education and career paths.

Job shadowing sessions will be offered in the following clinical areas:

• Ambulatory clinics
• CT scans
• Inpatient pharmacy
• Interventional radiology
• Laboratory
• MRI
• Nuclear medicine
• Ultrasound
• X-ray

Schedule

• Dates: Monday, August 12 – Friday, August 16, 2024
• Times: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Location: Seattle Children’s Hospital Campus, 4800 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105
• Provisions: Lunch is provided to campers each day of camp.
• Housing and Transportation: The program does not provide or arrange housing or transportation for students.

Eligibility

• Students must be entering their junior or senior year of high school in fall 2024 and be at least 16 years old by the start of camp (August 12).
• Students must reside in the Puget Sound area.
• Students must be available for the entire duration of Scrubs & ’Scopes Camp (five consecutive days).
• Students must be on time and stay for the duration of each day.

Application and Acceptance Notification

Applications for Summer 2024 Scrubs & ’Scopes Camp open on Tuesday, February 27, at 9 a.m. Pacific time. 

Once you begin filling out the online application, there is no option to save and return to your work. Thus, we recommend that you use our Seattle Children’s Scrubs & ’Scopes Camp Application Guide to help ensure you have prepared all the needed information to complete the online application. The Application Guide is not the official application. Please don’t submit it for consideration.

When you are ready, please complete the online application (opens Tuesday, February 27, at 9.am. Pacific time). The due date for applications is Friday, April 12, at 5 p.m. Pacific time.
