"During fellowship training, I worked with a young woman who had struggled with addiction for years. I was unrelenting in my efforts to motivate her to change her behavior. Finally, she agreed to be admitted to an inpatient program. Three months later, she wrote and thanked me for not giving up on her. “I was mad at you for a long time, but now I can see that you probably helped me the most. I just can’t thank you enough.” I heard from her again years later; she had started college and was doing well. For me, her story is what adolescent medicine is all about."
