"I chose to become a pediatric anesthesiologist because (in 1980) I thought the subspecialty provided the greatest challenges and greatest rewards of all the areas of anesthesiology. We provide care for infants weighing less than a pound and for high school football players more than 200 times their size. Sometimes they are critically ill and would die without the operation; sometimes they are basically healthy, but frightened of an unusual environment. It is a privilege to care for these young people near the beginning of their lives."

I have been an academic pediatric anesthesiologist for 30 years. During that time, I have always taken care of patients, providing general and regional anesthesia and teaching the next generation of providers to do the same. I have had the good fortune to have a wide variety of additional parts to my job: inpatient pain management, clinical research, basic science research, writing and public speaking.
Pediatric anesthesiology and pain management have grown substantially, and we now have far more sophisticated understanding and equipment than we used to. It has been a pleasure to have been a small part of that growth; I look forward to ongoing learning and teaching.
