  • Biography

    Dr. Cyril Engmann is the Global Program Leader and Director for the Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) program at PATH, an international health organization driving transformative innovation to save lives. In this role he leads a department of over 110 staff working in the USA, Asia, Africa and the Far East on a diverse and complex portfolio of work ranging across the value chain from NIH funded research grants through to implementation science and priming for scale efforts. Prior to this appointment, he led the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Newborn Health Strategy.

    Dr. Engmann also remains an active, practicing physician and academic, and in 2015 transitioned his clinical and academic base to the University Of Washington School Of Medicine where he is Professor of Pediatrics. Prior to that he spent 10 years at the University of North Carolina where was Attending Neonatologist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Maternal Child Health at the Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
    He graduated from University College and Middlesex School of Medicine in London, UK, and undertook his postgraduate medical training in the UK and subsequently the USA, where he completed his Pediatrics Residency and a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    Dr. Engmann is widely regarded as a Global Leader in the field. He is credited with initiating a number of global efforts including the Every Newborn Action Plan recently adopted by all 194 signatory countries of the United Nations, the Global Preterm Research Consortium and the Kangaroo Mother Care Acceleration Group. He recently was invited to educate and conduct a briefing at the US Congress on maternal, newborn, child health and nutritionrelated challenges and solutions, and chairs a consortium of academic and Non-governmental organizations(NGOs) that advices the Government of the UKs Department for International Development (DfID) on their Nutrition portfolio.

    In various roles either as Principal Investigator, Professor, Senior Program Officer or Global Program Leader, he has devised, executed on, or overseen a considerable number of complex, international, community and facility-based studies, programs and policy work. This has focused on maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and South East Asia, and been funded by the National Institutes of Health, World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Childrens Investment Fund Foundation, United States Agency for International Development and the United Kingdoms Department for International Development among others. He is involved in many systems improvement/implementation science programs internationally, and was on the Board of Directors of Kybele, an NGO committed to improving maternal and child health through medical educational partnerships. He also directed the University of North Carolina-ChildFund Maternal Child Health program which provided technical backstopping to ChildFunds activities in over 30 different countries.

    Dr. Engmann has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, abstracts and white papers. He is a sought after speaker at scientific, pediatric, public health conferences and forums, lectures widely, and sits on many Expert Advisory Boards and Steering Committees internationally and domestically. In addition to teaching and supervising a generation of MPH and PhD Candidates, medical students, pediatric residents and fellows in the USA and abroad, he has been an external examiner for the University of Queensland, Australia and Malawi College MPH programs, and remains a frequent reviewer for health journals such the Lancet, PLOS, International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Journal of Perinatology, Tropical Medicine and International Health, among others. He has practiced medicine in Asia, Africa and Europe, continues to be a Board Certified active neonatologist, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Pediatric Research.

    Cyril speaks five languages, enjoys his family and loves sports (soccer, squash, racquetball, table-tennis, badminton, tennis and swimming). He is an avid student of history, likes cooking, and is a classically trained baritone singer.
