  • Biography

    Dr. Means is an epidemiologist and implementation scientist who works to improve the delivery of evidence-based interventions.

    Dr. Means works primarily on projects related to child development, nutrition, and survival. Her work focuses both on solutions at the level of the provider and health system, including ways to improve delivery of services, as well as at the level of the family, includings ways to improve engagement in services. She also leads several initiatives focused on enhancing the policy relevance of research. Dr. Means leverages principles of co-design in her work, to ensure that delivery solutions incorporate the ideas and feedback of beneficiaries and other key individuals.

    Dr. Means specializes in hybrid implementation-clinical research, which integrates clinical and implementation outcomes to understand to what degree evidence-based interventions and the strategies used to deliver them are effective. Dr. Means is a mixed methodologist, meaning she incorporates complementary qualitative and quantitative data within her research. 

    Dr. Means works with collaborators around the world, including in the United States, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Malawi, India, Benin, Ethiopia, and elsewhere. Dr. Means teaches and mentors widely on implementation science methods, including co-directing the University of Washington Implementation Science Institute. Dr. Means is co-director of implementation science for the Global Center for Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh) and Associate Director of the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) implementation science core.
