Consultation

The IRB Office offers a consultation program that provides study teams with the opportunity to meet with staff to discuss their research project, ask questions, and learn about the IRB review process. Consultations are held over the phone.

Consultations are currently only being offered for studies that fit into one of the three scenarios described in the next section. Note, IRB staff may also facilitate consultation scheduling for complex questions sent to IRB@seattlechildrens.org.

Consultations are required for the following types of studies

  • Multi-site or collaborative studies where Seattle Children’s will serve as the single IRB (sIRB) for a participating site (pSITE) other than University of Washington (UW) or Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center (FHCRC).
  • Multi-site or collaborative studies where Seattle Children’s will rely on another IRB for review, unless the Reviewing IRB is UW, FHCRC, WCG IRB, Advarra, or PedCIRB.
  • Studies that will occur at international sites may require a consultation. Contact our office to determine whether a consultation is required.

To request a consultation

Complete the Consultation Request Form and send it via e-mail to IRB@seattlechildrens.org with the subject heading: CONSULTATION REQUEST. HSPP staff require complete and accurate the information be provided in the request form to schedule and prepare for the consultation appointment.

When should the consult be scheduled?

The consultation should be scheduled as early as possible as the results of the consultation may affect many aspects of the study and/or funding application.

Who should attend the consultation?

The consultation should be attended by study team members responsible for the IRB submission or communication and, as appropriate, the Principal Investigator (PI).
