Improve Pediatric Readiness in Your Emergency Department With the Seattle Children’s ImPACTS Team

May 7, 2025

Entrance to Seattle Children's Emergency DepartmentWhile high levels of Pediatric Readiness in the ED are associated with lower mortality rates, approximately 80% of children receive care in EDs that do not specialize in pediatric care. ImPACTS (Improving Pediatric Acute Care Through Simulation) was created to ensure that ill and injured children receive the highest quality of emergency care whenever and wherever it is needed. The Seattle Children’s ImPACTS team is a multidisciplinary ED care team supported by the Pediatric Pandemic Network that is passionate about ensuring children receive high-quality, evidence-based care throughout the region we serve.

The team utilizes the ImPACTS model to assess pediatric readiness using the Pediatric Readiness Survey (PRS) and simulation. They collaborate with community EDs to help identify pediatric champions in their setting and work with site leadership and frontline staff on the implementation of improvement strategies and measuring results. The team facilitates simulations (on-site, virtual, and hybrid) and supports educational and QI activities related to pediatric care and outcomes. So far, they have worked with 12 community EDs and are hoping to expand the program to other hospitals in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. There is no cost for EDs that wish to consult and collaborate with the Seattle Children’s ImPACTS program.
