At the time of his retirement in 1996,General Barry McCaffrey was the most
decorated and youngest 4-star General serving in the United States Army. During his 4 combat tours, he earned 3 Purple Heart Medals, 2 Distinguished Service Crosses, and 2 Silver Stars. His leadership of the left hook attack into Iraq during Operation Desert Storm etched him into the public's mind.By the end of his military career he led 84,000 military personnel as commander-in chief of the U.S. Southern Command. After his military career, McCaffrey went on to counsel Presidents and Secretaries of States on both military and drug policy. George Bush relied on his advice during the Salt II treaty negotiations in Moscow. Clinton relied on his drug policy expertise as Director, Office of National Drug Control Policy.
