  • Biography

I am driven to improve the health of children worldwide from diseases with the highest morbidity and mortality interests. As such, my primary clinical interests within Emergency Medicine are in diarrhea, respiratory distress, sepsis, shock, and trauma. I am also very interested in the application of bedside ultrasound to patient care, both in resource-rich and underserved settings. Within Infectious Diseases, my primary clinical interests are in fevers of unknown origin, HIV, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, parasitic infections, travel medicine, and tuberculosis.

I have spent roughly half of my medical career working, researching, and teaching in a diverse array of settings around the world. My clinical work abroad includes directing an Ebola Treatment Centre in Sierra Leone, training the first cohort of emergency medicine residents in Haiti, and primary care in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, but I am most passionate about training local health care providers in evidence-based, cost-effective care that maximizes survival and human potential. Most recently, I took an academic sabbatical to manage clinical operations in rural Liberia for Partners in Health and then to serve as the Director of Lao Friends Hospital for Children in 2017-2019, where I had the privilege of training the country's largest cohort of pediatricians, pediatric nurses, and pediatric nutritionists, before joining the University of Washington in 2020.

My major academic interests are in the development of a better understanding of the pathophysiology underlying chronic and acute childhood malnutrition, and in improving the diagnosis and treatment of malnourished children. The majority of my research experience in these domains has come in the conduct of large pragmatic clinical trials in rural African villages, as well as in smaller hospital-based cohort studies. I am fortunate to collaborate with colleagues in the Gut Health and Child Survival Scientific Priority Area, within the Global Center for Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh) in the Department of Global Health.
