  • Biography

    Caitlin A. Smith, MD, is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington and an attending pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Smith earned her medical degree from Albany Medical College in 2009 and completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of California at Davis in 2015. She completed her fellowship training in pediatric surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She has also received additional training with Dr. Marc Levitt at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and will be the second individual to successfully complete the Advanced Training Program in Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction.

    Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in adult general surgery and pediatric surgery. She is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

    Clinical Interests

    Her clinical interests include anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, cloaca, and complex abdominal tumors. She is the current Program Director for the cutting edge, multidisciplinary clinic at Seattle Children’s called the Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine (RPM) clinic. This represents one of the few multidisciplinary colorectal and reconstructive pelvic surgery clinics in the United States. This clinic involves a comprehensive approach to patients with issues of the pelvic floor and urinary, reproductive, and intestinal systems in a team effort to improve their quality of life.

    Research Description

    Dr. Smith’s research interests surround anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, and cloaca. She is currently also involved in multiple research studies with the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC). Specific areas of interest include improving the transition to adult care for this patient population, and improving long term cloaca outcomes.
