"My earliest experiences in psychiatry were at Harborview here in Seattle, where I first saw the devastating effects of severe mental illness. I realized then, and still appreciate, how little we know of the complex landscape of the human brain. I believe that to understand the root causes of disorders such as schizophrenia and autism, we need to know a great deal more about how the brain develops and how development impacts brain function. I go to work every day to discover something new about brain development and to ultimately help solve the complex puzzle of mental illness."

Professional History: Dr. Turner received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University. He then entered the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Washington, Seattle, and was awarded an M.D. degree in 1986, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1987 for studies of early development in invertebrates. Dr. Turner completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, followed by a residency in Psychiatry at University of California San Diego (UCSD). After completing his clinical training, he conducted postdoctoral research as a Howard Hughes Physician Fellow and NARSAD Young Investigator at UCSD.
