Orthopedics - Elucidating the Discoid Meniscus with Proposed New Classification System

Condition or Therapy:

Discoid Meniscus with surgical intervention treatment

Seattle Children's Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

What is the goal of this study?

This study will aim to serve as a comprehensive classification system to eliminate uncertainty in diagnosis of discoid meniscal types. This study will be conducted without undue risk to human subjects, as detailed documentation of their meniscal types will not affect patient care. Included in this classification is whether there is presence of intrasubstance degeneration. Included in this classification is the notion of instability in the body of the meniscus, mainly due to a widened popliteal hiatus.

Who can join the study?

  • Between ages 7 to 18 years
  • Diagnoses with discoid meniscus and are scheduled for surgical intervention

What will happen if my child takes part in this study?

  • Patients will be enrolled during their pre-operative or initial appointment with the surgeon
  • Data will be collected on patient’s pre-operative, operative, and post-operative appointments and medical records
