Unraveling the Genetic Causes of Disease
The Beier Lab uses genetic analysis in model systems as a means to understand human biology and disease, and identifies genes that contribute to human disease and developmental abnormalities.
Dr. David Beier
has developed innovative gene analysis strategies, and his team has positionally cloned the causal gene for over 40 mutations, many encoding previously uncharacterized genes. The Beier Lab's research has anticipated many of the major trends in model organism genetic analysis: the characterization of modifying genes and QTLs; the application of ENU mutagenesis for developmental investigation and for sequence-based analysis; and the utilization of SNP genotyping and next-gen sequencing for genetic mapping in the mouse and zebrafish.
The lab's efforts have provided insight into basic developmental processes, with research that is consistently forward-looking.
David Beier, MD, PhD, completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University and obtained MD and PhD degrees from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Washington. After completing an internship in pediatrics at Seattle Children's Hospital, he returned to Harvard Medical School for post-doctoral training in Dr. Philip Leder's lab, and to pursue clinical training in medical genetics. Beier joined the Harvard Medical School faculty in 1990 and became a professor there in 2005.
In 2012, he returned to Seattle to become professor in pediatrics at the University of Washington and director of the Center for Developmental Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Seattle Children's Research Institute.
