Research Description

Dr. Mendoza is a Principal Investigator in the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at the Seattle Childrens Research Institute. His research seeks to eliminate inequities in childhood physical activity and nutrition outcomes, with a focus on racial/ethnic minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations through innovative behavioral interventions in school and community settings. His studies have been funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NCI, NHLBI, and NIDDK) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Active Living Research Program).
Dr. Mendoza leads research on (1) reducing Latino preschoolers' screen time, such as television viewing, to prevent obesity; (2) increasing elementary schoolchildren's' physical activity, such as through the Walking School Bus, Bicycle Train, and other Safe Routes to School programs; and (3) promoting adolescent and young adult physical activity through wearable mobile health (mHealth) devices.
Dr. Mendoza also co-leads research examining household food insecurity and other social determinants of health among youth and young adults with diabetes.
