Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Classes Postponed Until Further Notice

COVID-19 Advisory

As a leader in healthcare, we want to do everything we can to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, and protect our patients, their families and each other. In order to align with social distancing recommendations from the CDC and Department of Health, PALS, PEARS and NRP classes will be cancelled until further notice. As this situation is continuously evolving, we will schedule makeup classes to those affected when we receive clearance to resume our classes.

Current Recommendations by the AHA and AAP:

The American Heart Association has recommended all Providers and Instructors of AHA programs be granted a 60-day grace period on expiration. The American Academy of Pediatrics also has similar recommendations to grant a 60-day grace period on expiration for those individuals whose NRP expiration date falls in March, April or May. Please note this recommendation may change as the COVID-19 situation is continuously evolving.

Please note that it is at the discretion of employers and regulatory bodies who require current life support cards. Please check with your employer regarding your organization’s policy on allowing extensions of expiration for PALS, PEARS or NRP certifications.

The safety and well-being of everyone remains our top priority and we thank you for your grace and understanding during this time.

Sincerely,

The Outreach Education team at Seattle Children’s Hospital

Get with the guidelines badgeThe Seattle Children’s PALS Training Center is an American Heart Association (AHA)–designated PALS Training Center. We follow the AHA Curricula for PALS Provider, PALS Renewal, HeartCode PALS Part 2 and PALS Provider for Physicians and Advanced Practitioners (adapted). Upon successful completion, participants are issued an electronic PALS Provider eCard effective for two years.

These official AHA PALS Courses train healthcare providers in the skills needed for assessment and management of infants and children with conditions of respiratory distress/failure, shock and cardiac rhythm disturbances, using the team approach. PALS certification is required for work in high-risk areas where advanced therapies are provided.

  • All courses assume proficient, high-quality BLS-HCP skills using current AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC. For HeartCode PALS, the Part 1 online Certificate of Completion is required prior to attending the Part 2 in-class session.

  • The 2015 PALS Provider Manual (published 2016) is required for preparation, during, and after the course. For HeartCode PALS, course fee includes electronic access to the manual for two years.

    • Borrow: Check out a copy from your department library or the hospital library.
    • Purchase hard copy or electronic version:

Course Descriptions and Fees

Please note: Registration closes at 12 noon Friday of the week prior to all courses conducted Thursday through Sunday.

  • The two-day Provider course is for healthcare providers taking the PALS course for the first time, or for those whose PALS Provider certification has expired. It includes both classroom teaching and hands-on practice with manikins in advanced airway management, vascular access, performance of basic life support, cardiac rhythm recognition and electrical and medical therapy. Fee includes morning beverages and lunch.

    Fees

    • Seattle Children's staff (non-physicians, not NPD-subsidized): $260
    • Seattle Children's residents/fellows: $260
    • Physicians/dentists: $375
    • All other participants: $285
  • For first-time PALS certification or renewal. Not open to contract RNs.

HeartCode is an appropriate alternative for experienced pediatric healthcare providers who are comfortable with computer simulation, and may have class-time limitations. As a first-time PALS course, it is a good option for experienced providers practicing PALS in their daily work. Part 1 provides online self-paced learning (average 4–8 hours), interactive case simulation and a written exam. In the half-day Part 2, participants practice and test team leader and team member skills using case scenarios. Completion of Part 1 is required for participation in Part 2.

Part 1 online key code is included in fee. If you already purchased a key code directly from https://shopcpr.heart.org/, you can register for Part 2 only for a discounted fee.

Information on computer technical requirements for Part 1 can be found at https://elearning.heart.org/static/faq.
