Safety and Injury Prevention
Kohl’s Helmet Safety Program at Seattle Children’s
In partnership with Kohl’s Cares, we travel Washington state providing free helmet fittings and giveaways for children and teens. We teach parents and kids how to properly fit every helmet we give away, but we don’t stop there. We also provide resources to teach you to fit helmets where you are, in the community or at home. Since our partnership began in 2007, we have properly fit and given away over 33,000 helmets. See below for the dates and locations of our free bike helmet fitting and giveaway events this year.
Free bike helmets available for children 1 to 18 years old. One helmet per child. Wearers must be present and be fitted to receive a helmet. Quantities are limited. First come, first served. No appointments needed.

Why are helmets needed?
Bike accidents are the second leading cause of serious injury in school-age children. In 2017, 13 people in Washington were killed in a bicycle accident, and 102 were seriously injured. Head injury is the leading cause of bicycle-related death and disability.
Helmets provide the best protection against head and brain injury, whether you child is riding a bike, scooter or skateboard, or using skates. However, a helmet will only protect when it fits well.
Wearing a helmet is required by law in Seattle, Tacoma, Bremerton, and many other Washington cities. However, many kids either don’t have a helmet or won’t wear one. We want to change that! Help your child get in the habit of wearing a helmet by starting when they're young. Be a good role model and wear a helmet yourself.
Getting the Proper Fit
A helmet won't protect your head if it doesn't fit correctly. Learn how to properly fit bike helmets for your family. Watch this video or visit Bike and Multi-Sport Helmets: Quick Fit Check for instructions and additional tips.
Please note that we fit and give away helmets only at these community events. Unfortunately, we are unable to fulfill individual requests for helmets or provide helmet donations.
