Clinical Interests

I am a clinical microbiologist with thirty years of experience in medical microbiology and a specialist in molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases. I have held the Microbiology Laboratory directorship position at Seattle Children?s Hospital since January 1999. In this role, I have actively promoted the integration of ever advancing technologies: 1) I have personally developed and continue to improve a number of laboratory-developed tests (LDTs), such as real-time PCR assays for the diagnosis of pertussis whooping cough, shiga toxin-producing E. coli, and toxinogenic Clostridium difficile. 2) I also have personally developed molecular diagnostic panels for culture-negative infections that included major pediatric pathogens in invasive infections. 3) quantitative molecular measurements of CMV, EBV, and BK are among the most challenging LDTs that I have developed for the diagnosis and monitoring of these viral infections with precision for hospital services involving the care for immunocompromised patients. 4) our lab is among the first adopters of mega-multiplex molecular platforms for the diagnosis of large array of respiratory infections etiologies with rapid turnaround time. Since 2011, we have been able to use data generated from the 'mega'-multiplex platform for extensive analysis of their clinical disease associations, age-specific attack rates, and severity of illness; 5) I have played a significant role in updating our microbiology lab with cutting edge technologies using MALDI-TOF instrumentation which has significantly changed diagnostic paradigm of waiting for incubation to around-clock identification of pathogens as they multiply.

Research Description

I also have a passion in research, and my main interests include 1) antimicrobial resistance mechanisms including multidrug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae 2) symbiotic evolution of bacterial agents associated with chronic infections such as in airways of cystic fibrosis and their drug resistance by multicellularity, and 3) characterization of changing microbial ecology and microbial diversity using traditional culture method, DNA technology, and proteomic mass spectrometry. I have maintained many years of successful collaborations with my colleagues and appreciate the opportunity to work with many of the physician scientist at Seattle Children's Hospital.
