"I love helping children by finding cause of their infection, treating with appropriate therapy, and learning and teaching from clinical experience. The challenges of research that further improve clinical care are inspiring."

Acting Instructor, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle Childrens Hospital; Research Associate, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
My research interest in the infectious diseases of immunocompromised hosts stems from my clinical experiences, where I was drawn into the challenging and complex management of infectious diseases in this population; the research that directly impacts clinical care is rewarding. With the widespread use of new molecular diagnostics such as multiplex PCR, the clinical role of previously under-diagnosed respiratory viruses (human coronavirus, rhinovirus, etc) in immunocompromised host has been poorly understood until recently. I am currently focused on examining the relative contribution of each respiratory virus infection to the disease burden in transplant recipients and establishing new endpoints. In addition, I am trying to investigate the bidirectional interaction between respiratory virus infection and antibiotic use. My goal is to develop effective therapeutic and preventive strategies to lead the way in the assessment of new antiviral therapies and vaccines.
