Our Culture

Our culture is built around our six values – compassion, excellence, integrity, collaboration, equity and innovation – and the ways in which we live them:

  • We show compassion by being kind and caring.
  • We show excellence by being the best at what we do.
  • We show integrity by being known for doing what’s right.
  • We show collaboration by being uniters.
  • We show equity by being open and embracing the uniqueness of others.
  • We show innovation by being relentlessly curious.

When you choose a career at Seattle Children’s, you become part of a culture where these values are exemplified every day. You are also choosing an organization that provides benefits that focus on equity across our employees; where patient safety is our top priority; and where we strive to hire a workforce that’s as diverse as the patients and families we serve.

All of this makes Seattle Children’s a top employer in our community, which we’ve had the privilege of serving for more than 100 years. Our workforce is proud to be here and if you join our team, we trust you will find Seattle Children’s a meaningful and fun place to work, too.

Start With Safety

Everyone at Seattle Children’s is responsible to create a safe environment for our patients, families and each other. We strive to be an error-free environment. We are transparent in providing information about patient safety.

Our safety culture includes reducing staff injuries and safeguarding our patients. We ensure staff have the support they need when faced with adversity.

Seattle Children’s is committed to being a drug-free workplace. We require a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Connected With Our Community

For more than 100 years, Seattle Children’s has specialized in meeting the unique physical, emotional and developmental needs of children from infancy through young adulthood. We provide inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, surgical, rehabilitative, behavioral, emergency and outreach services – regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

We are committed to increasing pediatric healthcare knowledge and adoption of best practices among our own staff and throughout the region. We are an academic training center for healthcare professionals in nearly every discipline.

As one of the top five pediatric research centers in the nation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute brings together the best minds in pediatric research. We work to set new standards of pediatric care and find new cures for childhood diseases.

Valuing Workforce Diversity and Inclusion

The patients and families we serve at Seattle Children’s come from many backgrounds. They bring distinct values, family structures, strengths and needs. The same is true for the people who do their life’s work here.

The people who work at Seattle Children’s are members of a community that seeks to respect all the qualities that make each of us unique – race, gender, culture, lifestyles, physical and developmental challenges, ideas and beliefs.

Our community welcomes diverse experiences, backgrounds and thoughts because this is what drives our spirit of inquiry and allows us to better connect with our increasingly diverse patients and families. Each of us is respectfully encouraged to be ourselves within this community, which cultivates and promotes diversity and inclusion at all levels.

Seattle Children's aims to have a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We believe we give our patients better care by having staff whose beliefs, attitudes and life experiences are similar to those of our patient families. Learn about Seattle Children’s Inclusion Network Program, which brings together workforce members to support the active, intentional and ongoing engagement with diversity, and our Center for Diversity and Health Equity, which works to improve health outcomes for all children.

Striving to Be an Anti-Racist Organization for Our Workforce, Patients and Families

Racism is a public health crisis. Racism has no place in our organization, and it affects the health of the children and families we serve.

That’s why Seattle Children’s is identifying, challenging and changing the culture, structures and behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism. This work is ongoing and will take time.

To realize this vision, we’ve adopted a long-term comprehensive plan called the Anti-Racism Organizational Change and Accelerated Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Plan. This plan was designed with the guidance and support from our patients, workforce, community and trusted expert leaders on anti-racism work, equity, diversity and inclusion.

We are asking our entire workforce to engage in this anti-racism journey so we continuously learn and support each other in taking action at the individual and organizational level.

Committed to Equal Opportunity

Our commitment to diversity is shown in our recruiting and hiring, our benefits and our employment practices.

Seattle Children’s is committed to equal opportunity in all conditions of employment. This includes hiring, promotion and disciplinary and discharge practices.

Our commitment to fair pay applies to all people regardless of their race, color, religion (creed), sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin (ancestry), disability, age, genetic information, marital status, citizenship, pregnancy or maternity, protected veteran status or any other status protected by applicable national, federal, state or local law.
