About the Summer Scholars Program

In partnership with the Center for Diversity and Health Equity, the Office for Teaching, Education and Research is excited to offer our SCRI Summer Scholars Program (SSSP).

The goal of the program is to provide undergraduate students with a background that is historically underrepresented in the biomedical and health sciences an opportunity to engage in basic, clinical and/or translational research projects during the summer at Seattle Children’s Research Institute under the mentorship of experienced researchers and principal investigators.

Students will learn to use lab equipment (as applicable), meet with mentors and gain valuable research experience. Students will also attend career and professional training sessions on topics such as writing abstracts, résumé writing, cultivating interview skills, crafting an effective LinkedIn profile and more. 

The program will culminate with each intern publishing an abstract of their research project in the internship's Program Report.

Interns will receive $20 an hour for 40 hours per week. Up to 30 hours per week will be dedicated toward research. The remaining 10 hours per week will be dedicated to the professional development of the student, including time to write and edit their research abstract and attend career and professional development sessions. The program will last up to 10 weeks.

Scholars in the program will be offered travel and housing, and we will work with you to determine your needs and offer assistance as possible.

Program Information

  • We are planning for the 2022 Summer Scholars Program to be an in-person experience. The program may be adjusted to accommodate social distancing and infection control protocols, to be determined later in the spring. 

    If needed, the SSSP may be adapted for a remote-only model if spread of COVID-19 becomes critical.

    All participants must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or be granted an exception according to hospital policy. 

    Applicants chosen for projects that cannot be translated into a remote-only model will be notified as soon as possible. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Questions regarding our in-person and remote-only programs can be directed to oter@seattlechildrens.org 

  • Students must have a strong background and interest in one of the following fields: neuroscience, biology, chemistry, mathematics, pre-med, behavioral health, public health or a related biomedical field. Students must also be in good academic standing.

    Ideal candidates are interested in pursuing medical or graduate studies in a biomedical or public health field. Students must be able to reside in or around Seattle during the summer internship.

     

    Minimum requirements

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Currently enrolled, or will be enrolled, in an undergraduate, community, or technical college program. Recent undergraduates who have obtained their baccalaureate within the last 6 months may also be eligible to apply. Applicants currently in graduate school or medical school are not eligible to apply.
    • Must have a working knowledge of computers, standard office software packages (Word, WordPerfect, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.) and standard office equipment (photocopiers, facsimiles, telephones, pagers, etc.).
    • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
    • Must adhere and demonstrate Children's values of compassion, excellence, equity, innovation, integrity, and collaboration.
    • Be able to work in a discretionary way and to maintain confidentiality of processed information.

     

    Preferred qualifications

    This program is intended to support students whose background is historically underrepresented in the biomedical and health sciences.

    Seattle Children’s adheres to the NIH’s definition of individuals with a background historically underrerpresented in medicine. The NIH defines persons who are underrepresented as:

    Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis (see data and the report Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering).

    The following racial and ethnic groups have been shown to be underrepresented in biomedical research: Black or African Americans; Hispanics or Latinos; American Indians or Alaska Natives; Native Hawaiians; and other Pacific Islanders.

        • What are your career goals?
        • What research background do you have, if any? (Note: a lack of research experience may not exclude you from the internship opportunity.)
        • How do you think this internship will help you achieve your career goals?

    Personal/Professional Reference:

    • The names and email address of 1 reference. 
    • We will contact your reference directly if your application proceeds to the interview stage of our application process. References will likely be contacted at the end of March or in early April.

    Choose your preferred project(s):

    • Provide the name of your top three projects for the internship and why you chose those projects.
    • Select 3 projects from the project list (published every January).

    • February 1: Applications open.
    • February 28: Applications close
    • March 1 - April 15: Applications Reviewed & Selections Made
      • Applicants will be notified of selection for first round interviews or rejection by April 21
    • May - June 18: Onboarding for Selected Interns
    • June 13 - Aug 19, 2022 - Internship
    • Fall – SSSP report published and distributed.
    • November TBD – OTER's Postdoc and Student Research Symposium – Students invited to present their summer research from the internship.
