RFL Consultation

Research and family liaisons (RFLs) are currently available to provide consultation regarding ethical issues related to the consent process in research.

RFLs have aided research teams in improving the consent process by suggesting optimal ways to present multiple studies to families during a single research visit, and by assisting them in the creation of parental permission, consent and assent forms.

RFLs also provide consultation regarding the modification of institutional consent and assent forms, as well as policies dealing with parental permission, consent and assent. Acting as consultants to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), RFLs are required to be present during the presentation of research information for specific studies.

RFLs are also available to:

  • Assist research staff in developing written tools (study-specific consent/assent forms and visual aids, presenter check lists and more) used in presenting research information to prospective participants to enhance the informed consent process
  • Assist research staff with the resolution of any participant- or research staff–generated issues regarding participation in research studies
  • Serve as a resource for investigators as well as research and clinical staff regarding regulatory and policy issues related to research participation
