Mark R. Mercurio, MD, MA

Mark R. Mercurio, MD, MA, is director of the Yale Pediatric Ethics Program, associate professor of pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine and an attending neonatologist at Yale–New Haven Children's Hospital. At Yale, he directs and teaches courses in medical ethics for medical students, pediatrics residents and fellows and physician associate students. He is chair of the Pediatric Ethics Committee at Yale and is a member of the Executive Committee for the Yale University Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics. He has more than 20 years' experience as a clinical neonatologist, both in a major academic center and in a community hospital, as well as 20 years' experience in clinical ethics consultation.

Dr. Mercurio received his undergraduate degree in biochemical sciences from Princeton University and his MD from Columbia University. He completed a pediatrics residency and neonatology fellowship at Yale, and received a master's degree in philosophy from Brown University. Invited lectures and publications have involved analyses of ethical issues in adult and pediatric medicine, with a primary focus on pediatrics. Recent work has appeared in Pediatrics, The Hastings Center Report, the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, the Journal of Perinatology and other publications. Dr. Mercurio currently serves as the national program director for the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Bioethics and coordinates medical ethics education for the AAP publication Pediatrics in Review.
