Jeffrey R. Botkin, MD, MPH
Jeffrey R. Botkin, MD, MPH, is a professor of pediatrics and adjunct professor of internal medicine in the Division of Medical Ethics at the University of Utah, where he is also associate vice president for research integrity. Dr. Botkin received his AB from Princeton University, his MD from the University of Pittsburgh and his MPH from Johns Hopkins University. He trained as a fellow in law, ethics and health at Johns Hopkins University in affiliation with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown.
Dr. Botkin has more than 20 years of experience in the clinical care of pediatric patients. His research focuses on the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic technology, with a particular emphasis on research ethics, genetic testing for cancer susceptibility, newborn screening and prenatal diagnosis. He is a former chair of the Committee on Bioethics for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Currently, Dr. Botkin is a fellow of the Hastings Center and serves on a number of federal, local and national advisory boards, including the DHHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection, the FDA Pediatric Advisory Committee and the CDC’s Working Group on the Evaluation of Genomic Applications in Practice and Prevention. He is currently co-chair of the Project on Medical Sequencing at the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Dr. Botkin has an extensive publication record in biomedical ethics and has been an invited speaker on numerous occasions across the country.
