The Research Specimen Processing Laboratory provides services such as specimen processing, shipping and storing for Seattle Children’s investigators.

The Research Specimen Processing Laboratory (RSPL), supported by the Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR), processes, packages, stores and ships research specimens for Seattle Children’s Research Institute's clinical research investigators and team members.

Services

The following services are offered to investigators upon request:

  • Specimen processing
  • Specimen shipping
  • Specimen retrieval from within the hospital
    • Pickup is available from the clinical or Clinical Research Center (CRC) lab
    • If pneumatic-tube delivery to the clinical lab would compromise the quality of the specimen, alternative arrangements can be requested in the RSPL Application
  • Specimen transport outside the hospital
  • Custom labeling
  • Specimen storage
  • Education and training
  • Dedicated bench space for specimen processing

In addition, the RSPL provides the following research equipment:

  • Refrigerated centrifuge and microcentrifuge
  • Room temperature centrifuge
  • Freezers (-20°C and -80°C) and refrigerator
  • Biological safety cabinet
  • Fume hood and flammable storage
  • Liquid nitrogen (requires additional training)

Location

The RSPL is located on the main campus of Seattle Children’s Hospital on the secured 8th floor Airplane wing. Approved staff are provided with badge permission to access the 8th floor and the lab.

To obtain lab access, users must complete the Bloodborne Pathogens, Infectious Waste and Decontamination and Biological Substances Shipping and Transport training on CHEX (a Web-based learning management system available through the Seattle Children’s network) and complete an orientation provided by RSPL staff.

Hours

RSPL staff are available Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
