
Office of Biostatistical Services staff support Children’s investigators by providing state-of-the-art statistical design and data analysis and assisting with interpretation of results and manuscript writing.
The Office of Biostatistical Services (OBS) core, supported by the Center for Clinical and Translational Research, provides state-of-the-art statistical design and data analysis services as well as education and training for clinical, laboratory and outcomes researchers at Seattle Children's. The core supports investigators and staff members at all levels and from all disciplines.
The OBS core's specific aims include:
- Providing state-of-the-art research study design and data analysis methodology for Seattle Children’s Research Institute investigators
- Educating research scientists about biostatistical methods and data management practices that can enhance their research
- Developing innovative analysis methods and software for application to research data sets
Services
The Office of Biostatistical Services offers a variety of services and resources upon request.
The following services are provided to Seattle Children’s researchers at no charge:
- Assistance with grant-proposal development and study-design planning, including power/sample size calculations
- STATA (statistical data analysis software) training for researchers
- Statistical methodology seminars and individual training sessions
The following services are provided to Seattle Children’s researchers for a fee:
- Creation of randomization sequences and materials
- Database consulting regarding appropriate structure and formatting of data for statistical analysis
- Data "cleaning" (i.e., screening data sets for errors, inconsistencies, missing items and formatting problems)
- Performance of data analysis and assistance with interpretation of results
- Graphics creation
- Technical writing or editing for abstracts, manuscripts or reports
In addition, all work on projects not geared toward scientific research (e.g., business operations projects) and all services to outside entities (researchers not part of Seattle Children’s or the University of Washington School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics) are fee-based.
